Most money in the economy is not printed by the government — it is created by commercial banks. When a bank makes a loan, it simply credits the borrower’s account with a new deposit, creating money out of nothing. This “inside money” (bank deposits) is what people actually spend, and it expands and contracts with lending rather than with the physical printing of cash.
